![]() Tobacco Barn Spirit Houses
Tobacco Barn Spirit Houses are a visual journey attempting to shore up something indelibly North Carolina, something of beauty fading from our land. The artist has always thought that tobacco barns were an important part of the southern landscape here. Her mother, Brooke Taylor, painted watercolors of them and Hollie grew up appreciating the charm of the leaning buildings, some covered with kudzu, some standing proud and still in use. Spirit Houses are made in many parts of the world. In Thailand they are made of teak, are positioned on pedestals outside the home, or the business. They are like shrines, and protect and bring good fortune to those indwelling. Flowers, food, incense, candles, are laid in them as gifts to the spirits in order that blessings come to the family.
